Sponsored by the Embankment Preservation Coalition and Harsimus Cove Association. Free and open to the public. Grace Church Van Vorst, 39 Erie Street at 2nd Street (entrance on 2nd), Jersey City. “Jersey City: Soft Focus” was produced and directed by Vance Stevens, with Jersey City State College students and others, around the time of the nation's Bicentennial. The film tells the story of this area from the glaciers, to European settlement, through the 1970s. Using photos, film clips, animation, and inimitable Jersey City voices, the film covers the city's highs and post-industrial lows, its immigrant populations, its shaping by railroads, its ties to New York, and its colorful leaders. Prescient contributors call attention to the importance that individuals and organized citizens would have in the City's gradual reclamation over the next few decades. Almost thirty-five years after the film's completion, some of the people in it will be present at this showing to answer questions from the audience. Registration:, Saturday, May 17th, 11 am: A Walk Along the Embankment. The Embankment Preservation Coalition and Harsimus Cove Association invite you to learn about our Downtown's history, centered on the circa 1902 Harsimus Branch Embankment, and the role it can play in our city's future. Rick James, author of the Embankment's nomination to the State and National Registers of Historic Places, and Stephen Gucciardo, current president of the Coalition, will be your guides. Space on the tour is limited, so please send your reservation to When you make your reservation, we will send you the meeting place.
